Dry Skin Treatments

No one likes to have to care for dry skin but it is a very common skin condition. You can recognize dry skin by the symptoms of peeling, cracking, and itching skin over your body. The skin starts to peel and crack due to a loss of moisture and these conditions can take place anywhere on the body – scalp, face, hands, thighs, feet.
Using harsh skin products? There’s nothing worse than a harsh soap that wreaks havoc and strips the moisture from your skin. The good news is that you can combat that extra dry skin with natural beauty products straight from your pantry by applying them to the skin. Honey, olive oil, teas, etc. are all effective dry skin products so browse the recipe section to search for and make your own natural skin care products.
Dry skin commonly occurs in the cold winter air when there is low humidity, harsh winds and low temperature outside and hot furnaces inside that blow dry air.
Tip: Purchase a Humidifier
A room heated by a furnace can have as little as 10 percent moisture. In the winter, consider sleeping with a humidifier in your bedroom to avoid waking up with very dry skin. Keep doors closed so the moist air doesn’t escape the room.
Dry skin can also be attributed to bathing in water that is entirely too hot. Very hot water will suck the moisture from your skin so try a lukewarm shower in the morning or when you are washing your hands. Easy rule of thumb – If your skin turns red while washing, the water is too hot.
Tip: Follow up your bath or hand washing with a dry skin moisturizer
Moisturizers will keep you skin supple and soft and should be applied while skin is damp. Your moisturizer can be a cream or an oil. Creams can be applied if you prefer a heavier application while oils tend to be lighter on the skin. Extra virgin coconut oil is one of the great oils that will combat your dry skin issues. You can mix oils to create the ultimate dry skin treatment.
Dry skin can also be due to medication, overexposure to sunlight (sunburn), or vitamin deficiencies. If you suffer from dry skin, try adding some healthy oils to your diet. It doesn’t take a lot, as oils are very high in calories. Nuts are full of beneficial oil, as are fatty fish, such as salmon and mackeral.
If you find that you are still having issues with dry skin, it is advised that you should see a doctor, as you may have a serious medical condition.
